Therapeutic yoga as part of falls prevention

“I’m afraid I’ll fail the test. I should not even attend.”

This concern was expressed by an 85 year-old woman who was worried about falling and anxious about taking a falls risk assessment as part of our free Falls Prevention Program using RxRelax Therapeutic Yoga.

We’re so happy that she did attend. She says she loves it.

She is not alone in her concerns though!  Of the 40+ participants who’ve attended so far, 67% reported falling in the past year or feeling unsteady when navigating.  Jay Gupta, YogaCaps’ President, pharmacist and yoga therapist is leading the classes. He says that “there are many components to maintaining our balance and the good news is that therapeutic yoga may help with many of these aspects”.

While we started this class in the Fall season, falls prevention is a year round priority. It’s supported by moment to moment awareness of our body and mind state, while merging and managing that with all of the data from our environment. It’s for every season and it’s for all of us, no matter our age.

If you are interested in attending, it’s not too late. Just let us know via YogaCaps’ contact form.

Assessments are being led by YogaCaps volunteers Joline Manseau APRN, Mary Behnke BSN, RN, RxYT, HTP/A, NHTI Nursing Professor Aleta Billadeau MSM and 8 of the next generation of nurses (students!).

Thanks to all of the participants, healthcare professionals and yoga therapists for creating a caring community.
